Tents are most commonly sized by the number of people they will sleep. This is usually determined by the number of average adults who could lay in a sleeping bag in the floor area of the tent, so the exact size of tent you require may vary from the stated number of people depending on the way you camp.

Solo travellers may be fine with a 1-person tent, especially if pack size and carry weight is a concern, but might want to upgrade to a 2-person tent if they have some luggage or want some more head or shoulder space. Hikers will often stick to the person sizing of a tent in order to minimize additional carry weight.
