How To Reattach a Guy Rope

How To Reattach a Guy Rope

Has your canvas tent or gazebo’s guy rope become detached or need replacing? Don’t fear, it’s simple to reattach a guy rope neatly. This method is ideal for neatly fixing the nylon ski rope style guys commonly found on canvas tents.

Step 1 – Pass the end of the guy rope through the attachment point until you reach the point where the loop needs to form. Remember to leave enough of a loose tail on the rope to form the attachment.

Step 2 – Push together the rope on the ‘guy line’ side of the attachment point. The structure of the rope will bunch up like a concertina, allowing you to form a space between the braiding to push in the end of the rope into the centre space.

Step 3 – Keep feeding the rope end down the centre of the guy rope until your loop is neatly formed.

Step 4 – Pull the guy rope out tight to ‘close up’ the outer rope structure again.

That’s all there is to it. No fancy knotting or braiding required to reattach a guy rope.

Is something so simple secure in use, though? Yes, a guy rope is pulled tight in use which, in turn, pulls the braiding of the rope tight over the portion running through the centre and holds it firmly.

One last note – while this is perfect for use on nylon guy ropes with a hollow centre, it won’t work on other types of rope with a central core.
